After?paper??Crips?and?Bloods:?Made?in?America

Description
Steps:
1. Actively watch the portion of the documentary and watch the segment of the documentary Crips
and Bloods: Made in America (First 80 mins).
2a. Select 4 key sociological concepts (people, theories, terms, etc) from our course that you
think can be useful to analyze the documentary from a sociological perspective. You must select at
least one THEORY from the course, the other 3 are open for you to decide.
3. After viewing, type up a brief, yet concise, response (5 double spaced typed pages using 12pt
Times New Roman font) that analyzes what you saw during the documentary from the perspective
of a sociologist. You want to make sure that you fully explain (i.e. friend test) the sociological
concepts you selected while providing evidence from the documentary that enforces or displays or
shows it on display. In the case of theory, you may find that the documentary challenges major/
minor premises put forth. Remember there is no such thing as an infallible theory, right
Helpful Hints:
There are no right or wrong answers for the after paper. What is different
this time is that I want you to pick out 4 key sociological people/concepts/terms/etc. from this
term, explain them, and apply them to the documentary. Creativity is encouraged and welcomed!
The point is not to have the correct answer, but to use the material from this class to craft an
engaging and interesting assessment of the film from a sociological viewpoint. This means that
your response should be based in your unique sociological imagination while putting your critical
thinking skills on display. Some of you may see issues of power, some may pick out things about
race and ethnicity, others will see something completely different. It doesn t matter what you want
to write about, it is that you can demonstrate that you are doing it as a sociologist.

Sociology 101: The After Paper
Purpose: As I noted at the beginning of the term, one of the main intentions of this course is to
show you that the sociological imagination can be used to examine the human experience. Now is
your chance to demonstrate this. For this assignment, you are going to watch the same segment of
the documentary Crips and Bloods: Made in America. However, rather than being a passive viewer, this
time you are going to watch and write what you see as an engaged sociologist.
Goal: The after paper will serve as a way to demonstrate that you understand and can implement
the sociological imagination that sociologists use to examine the world around them.
Grading: The after paper counts for 20% of your final grade and will be graded out of 100 points.
Steps:
1. Actively watch the portion of the documentary and watch the segment of the documentary Crips
and Bloods: Made in America. You can attend the viewing party to do this, or watch it on your own
time.
You should focus your attention on two things during the documentary:
2a. first, select 4 key sociological concepts (people, theories, terms, etc) from our course that you
think can be useful to analyze the documentary from a sociological perspective. You must select at
least one theory from the course, the others are open for you to decide.
2b. second, take active notes about what you are seeing. This time around I want you to view it as a
sociologist. Unlike the before paper, this time you want to focus your notes towards jotting down
the evidence that you can relate to the sociological concepts that you have selected for the paper.
