In your case study you will present the work you’ve done with your client, including discussion of relevant scientific literature. In your case study, be sure to include the following information:
1. Introduction to the client
2. Presentation of a needs analysis
3. Plan and implementation of intervention
4. Evaluation of intervention
5. Self-evaluation reflection
1. Introduction to the client. Provide a brief description (1 or 2 paragraphs) of the client(s) and what the client(s) is/are trying to achieve. To assure client confidentiality, please do not include the client’s name in the case study.
2. Presentation of a needs analysis. What did you do and how Decisions regarding what information you sought and how you elicited the information from the client (e.g. performance profile, structured interview, lab or field tests) must be supported with scientific references, and discussion of the references where relevant. Analysis of the data obtained from the needs analysis must be clearly presented.
3. Plan and implementation of intervention. What interventions did you choose, and why How did you implement the intervention, i.e. what particular techniques did you use, and why Again, all decisions made must be discussed in relation to the scientific literature.
4. Evaluation of the intervention.
o How did the client respond Did the intervention work How do you know This will include analysis of any pre- and post-intervention data you have collected that will allow you to assess the success of the intervention.
o Discuss why the intervention may have/have not worked. Again, use reference to the scientific literature as appropriate.
o If you had similar case in the future, what might you do differently
5. Self-Evaluation Reflection. Reflect on what you have learned about your own ability to work with clients. What skills have improved What skills need more work How will you attempt to gain experiences that will improve the skills that need more work
6. Appendix: Include a record of and short reflection on meetings with client.
Part II Assessment Guidelines:
50% of the Case Study mark: Clarity and thoroughness of the report of the needs assessment, the intervention that was implemented, the analysis and interpretation of the results of the intervention, and your self-evaluation reflection.
50% of the Case Study mark: Ability to discuss your work in the context of relevant scientific literature.
Discussion of the Scientific Literature
Note that your description of all the work you have done and your reflection on it is worth half the mark, and your ability to relate your work to the scientific literature is worth half the mark. The discussion of scientific literature does not form a separate section; rather, appropriate reference to and discussion of scientific literature should be present throughout the entire case study. Every decision you make regarding what you have chosen to do (e.g. what information you have chosen to collect from the client; what intervention you have chosen to implement) and how you have done it (e.g. if you have chosen a relaxation intervention, which particular relaxation techniques did you use; if endurance is targeted as an important performance measure, how was endurance measured) should be referenced. In many cases the reference should also be discussed. In some cases as little as one explanatory sentence will establish the relevance of the reference; in other cases in-depth discussion is required. To what extent you should discuss each reference is, ultimately, a judgment call. Scientific literature that underpins major decisions that are critical to your intervention would generally be discussed in fuller depth than literature that underpins more minor decisions that are made. Be sure to consult with your supervisor about how to discuss the referenced literature.Marking Guidelines for the Case Study
There are no set weightings for the various sections of the case study. But following are guidelines by which the case study will be marked:
F: Insufficient detail of the needs analysis, intervention, and self-reflection is presented. Little or no, attempt is made to critically evaluate the intervention with reference to the literature. The organisation of the report and clarity of writing are poor
D (adequate): A needs analysis and intervention is presented, the outcome of the intervention is evaluated, and some self-evaluation reflection is present. There is some critical evaluation of the intervention and its outcome with appropriate reference to the literature, although in places references may be missing, or discussion may be superficial. There may be some errors or problems with organisation or clarity of writing, or a general lack of thoroughness.
C (good): A needs analysis and intervention is presented, the outcome of the intervention is evaluated, and self-evaluation reflection is present. There is generally good critical evaluation of the intervention and its outcome, with appropriate reference to the literature and good discussion of the important literature. There may be some errors or problems with organisation or clarity of writing, or in places discussion could be more thorough.
B (Very Good): A needs analysis and intervention is presented, the outcome of the intervention is evaluated, and self-evaluation reflection is present. Critical evaluation of the intervention and its outcome, with appropriate reference to the literature, is clear and thorough. Discussion of how you would do things in the future shows the ability to learn from the outcome of this experience.
A (excellent): In addition to meeting the criteria for B grade, there is evidence of additional effort and/or mastery of the material. Following are some examples of such evidence: the report is well-organised and clearly presented; reference to the literature is particularly thorough, with in-depth discussion when appropriate (and without irrelevant discussion!). For further progress in this grade band, the report will be exceptionally well organised and presented. Issues raised in the report will be presented with a high degree of clarity, and will demonstrate an in depth knowledge of the subject area. Reflections on the work conducted during the case study will be extensive, detailed, and particularly insightful.
