The reason why Chinese has poor CSR
As pointed out earlier, the levels of CSR among Chinese corporations is relatively low compared to developed countries like the United States and japan. The first factor that contributes to poor CSR among Chinese companies is the relative low levels of income per capita. In 2010, Monaco was ranked as the richest country in the world with an income per capita of $197,460. CSR is an expensive undertaking and therefore, companies in countries with relatively low levels of economic development like China have low levels of CSR. However, the Chinese economy is growing at a quick pace and the levels of CSR are expected to improve (Lin, 2009).
The second reason why Chinese firms have poor CSR is corruption. The corruption index in China is relatively higher compared to developed and developing countries. China has weak ant-corruption laws and this tempts companies to engage in corruption to increase profits (Darigan& Post, 2009). China has relatively low levels of harmony and this may explain why CSR levels are low in the country. Harmony in this case can be defined as a cultural dimension that relates people to the social and natural world.
Compared to the United States and other developed countries, China has relatively low levels of egalitarianism and this contributes to poor CSR in the country. Egalitarianism is a cultural aspect that reflects the way in which a society promotes responsible behavior (Campbell, 2007). The Chinese society is largely hierarchical and people adhere to ascribed roles to ensure productive and responsible behavior. In China, there is low Individual autonomy in how people relate to the society. Instead of being seen as autonomous, the Chinese society practices embeddedness in which people are seen as entities that are embedded to the society. According to research, CSR is more likely to flourish in autonomous societies and this explains why China has poor CSR.
China has relatively low levels of civil liberties and political rights and this has contributed to poor CSR. Civil liberties and political rights make it possible for people to freely express their concerns regarding corporate social responsibility. For example, companies in societies with weak civil liberties like China have higher chances of selective disclosure of environmental impacts to cover the shortcomings of their CSR (Lin, 2009).
Lastly, China has poor CSR because it has relatively high levels of power distance. In such a society, the less powerful members believe that power is not distributed equally.
