The current generation is in a dire situation where young people no longer try hard to achieve things. The previous generations of youth from the 1960s going backward were very responsible and ambitious in all the activities they did. The current young people exhibits worrying qualities and values that scare any visionary person who hopes for a better future for the country.
“Generation Me” is notorious in not being ready to involve itself in activities that may bring change to society. I have personally observed that the level of participation of young people in activities that promote public good is small. Many young people believe that they have no control over what the society does and hence it is better to let things be. This situation is getting worse especially when one considers, “The declining belief in personal responsibility and the efficacy of hard work and sacrifice.” (Twenge 153). Generation Me has actively separated itself from collective action and even those who show some interest hardly persist for long. The majority of young people distrust those in power, and in most cases believe in conspiracies. I believe, based on my interactions with fellow young people, that conspiracies play a crucial role in killing enthusiasm in many people. Many youths see the current system in the world as predetermined by a section of individuals. Conspiracy theories reinforce the belief of lack of control in many and hence most do not bother to participate in societal activities.
The culture we are living in also plays a crucial role in discouraging youths to try. I believe individualism have made people stop caring about others or helping the community. Generation Me believe in independence but ironically blames others for its failures. When people live together as a community, it is possible to develop a sense of belonging where everyone believe he or she has something to contribute to the society. A sense of responsibility develops and ones learns to sacrifice his time and resources for the common good. If young people were to come out of their solitary selves, they would learn to take responsibility and persevere in all that they do since when one works with others; he or she gets motivated and learns to keep trying. It will take much effort to change the current generation and leads it to the right direction, and more research is still wanting.
