Semester Project Phase 3 Final Paper
For this phase, you ll consult the research articles/books/book chapters approved for phase two, that are about (1) a course topic related to globalization that (2) has affected the selected country. Remember that these must be scholarly articles–that is, publications resulting from research done about that topic and/or country. Note that if your initial topic and/or article was/were not approved, it is advisable that you meet with Prof. Placide or with Gabe/Claude and confirm that your new selection/s are appropriate.
Your paper should contain three sections:
Introduction (One paragraph)
In your introduction, indicate the country and topic you chose to explore, and why. Also indicate how you went about doing so (for example, consulted 2 research articles, book chapters, etc.) And briefly, in no more than a few sentences, indicate what the sources are about.
Body (About six to eight paragraphs) In one to two paragraphs, provide a definition of your topic. If your topic is hunger in Brazil, what does hunger mean Do not use a dictionary. Your definition should have an academic source. If the sources you consulted do not define the topic, search for a definition in another academic source (scholarly article, book, or textbook.) If you use a source other than your research articles, be sure to cite them using in-text citations AND list it in your bibliography. How is hunger related to globalization generally
Then in about four to six paragraphs do the following:
Where applicable, identify research questions in each article. That is, what did the authors set out to learn [Usually, research questions may be found in the first two or so pages of an article.]/Alternatively (that is, if there are no research questions, what is the thesis of each article/source See the attached research article on which I have highlighted sections as examples of thesis statements and research questions.
Summary of literature review: What references do authors make to previous research on this topic Summarize previous research findings as described in each literature review. See the attached article for an example of a literature review.
Identify the research findings of your articles/sources. That is, what are the new research findings described by each source What do your sources say about the topic/issue What do they say about how the topic/issue has affected your country How have citizens lives been affected What conclusions are drawn
Indicate whether these findings/conclusions made by the authors support any of the three perspectives of the nature of globalization (skeptics, hyperglobalizers, transformationalists) discussed at the start of the course, is/are reflected in research questions. Which How so
Conclusion (One paragraph)
What are your closing thoughts about the information you found What do those findings tell you about the nature of globalization [For example, did you find that globalization has involved policies that have increased or caused hunger in the country you chose Or perhaps what you learned tells you that globalization has both negative (say what they are) and positive (indicate them as well) consequences.]
You must, of course, properly document your sources, using BOTH in-text citations and a bibliography. You may use any citation format (for example, MLA, APA, ASA, Chicago Manual of Style) provided that you remain consistent throughout the paper. Guidelines for all citation styles are available on the Internet. DO NOT include annotations written for phase two in this bibliography.
NOTE: Be very careful to avoid plagiarism. One way to do so is to properly document your sources. This assignment will be evaluated using Safe Assign, Blackboard s tool for detecting plagiarism. Students will be allowed to see the percentage of their work that appears to not be original. Generally, submissions that appear to match someone else s by more than 20% will be penalized.
Your paper should be 3-4 pages (excluding the bibliography), typewritten, double-spaced, use 12-point font, and submitted on Blackboard in Word format (only). RTF and zipped files will not open on Blackboard. If you fail to submit your document in the correct format, you run the risk of failing this assignment.
