Design a Group Therapy Program: In order to demonstrate the ability to utilize information taught during the course, students will be required to create their own group therapy program to address a clinical issue, and population, of their choice.
The final presentation on the group therapy program will include, at the very least, the target population, the clinical issue to be addressed, the reason that this clinical issue was chosen, an overview of available background information on the clinical issue (which requires reviewing the research/professional literature on the particular issue, as well as on the application of group counseling to that particular issue, if available), how clients will be recruited for the group, an informed consent agreement for the group, the number of group meetings that will take place, the format of the group, anticipated problems that might be encountered with the group, and a schedule of activities/meeting topics that will guide the course of the group. It is expected that you will provide some significant detail about the activities or topics that you plan to cover for given sessions.
The group therapy programs will be presented in the form of class presentations during the last four scheduled classes, which will include a presentation of the review of the literature pertaining to the clinical issue. A list of the references used in creating the group will be provided to the instructor at the time of the class presentation, as well as a copy of the informed consent agreement.
