Topic Proposal: Avant garde is in the now. The style exists to reject the previous styles of the past. The problem
is avant garde can t really exist through style or format because these mediums are controlled by the repetitive
circle of the human mind. The only way it can be represented is through the advance of technology.
So basically the idea of the avant garde is based on only dealing with the new. But since the style is
implemented by humans that premise isn t possible. Humans really don t deal with the new. Are brains are
circular. We are forced to repeat the same patterns over and over. It s only through growth in technology that
anything truly new can exist. Take for instance the on going Architectural Record magazines. Based in the
United States they have been continuously circulating since the 1890s. This means they have documented many
stages of the avant garde in the last 125 years or so. By looking at some of the variations of the style in print one
thing is clear. Many parallels can be drawn between the building styles of then and the building styles of now.
This effectively makes both eras styles part of the old. How both the styles of the past and present could justify
themselves as being avant garde is through their use of new technologies in building style during their respective
times.
