For the research paper you must pick a topic and write an essay using both secondary and primary sources. Your
topic should be specific enough to be covered in a paper of 2000 3500 words (8 14 pages, for example: High
Tang Poetry, Song Dynasty Military History). Your research paper should have two parts:
A)Exposition (1250 2000 words). In this section of the essay, you must use at least four

topic, and also some sense of the critical debates outlined by your sources. You do NOT need to develop your
own thesis regarding your topic, but you must present the THESES OF THE AUTHORS YOU HAVE READ.

B)Analysis (750 1500 words). In this section of the essay, you must use at least one primary source to analyze
and critique the secondary sources presented in the first part of your paper. Choose one of the questions that has
been raised in the secondary sources you read and address it using your own analysis of one or more primary
sources. This section of the essay is just like the interpretive essays you wrote earlier in the term, except that
instead of me asking the question, you will discover the question in your research. You may use new primary
sources drawn from outside of class readings, but at least one of our class primary sources must be drawn from
our readings. In this section of your essay you should present a thesis.
Your thesis may correspond with that of one of the secondary authors that you have read, but it must be clearly
marked. In other words, if you were writing a paper on Chinese Buddhism, and had cited several who had asked
Why did Buddhism spread so rapidly in medieval China , that would be a good question to address in the
analytical section of your paper. If one of your authors had answered, Buddhism spread in medieval China
because of the influx of foreign conquerors and you agreed with that analysis, that could be the thesis for part B
of your research paper. You would have to: 1)Clearly state this as your thesis; 2)credit the author who had
originally articulated this idea in the scholarship that you read; 3)Present your own, original analysis of primary
evidence we have read for class as to why you agree with this analysis, making sure to cite all of your sources
correctly.
Both parts A and B of your paper must employ proper citation methods. You may use brief footnotes in the body
of the essay (Author, page #), but a BIBLIOGRAPHY must be included at the end of your paper.
