Learning Activity #1 for Response to (AK)
Knowledge workers are workers whose main capital is knowledge. These kinds of employees think for a living and they include engineers, physicians, scientists, lawyers,
accountants and architects among others (Pyoria , 2005) The kind of work they do is considered as non-routine problem solving which requires a combination of
convergent, divergent and creative thinking. There are many definitions that scholars have ascribed to knowledge workers including all employees involved in the
production and distribution of knowledge products. Others have interpreted knowledge work as the direct manipulation of symbols to create an original knowledge
product. These kinds of workers spend a good chuck of their time searching for information, up to 40%. They are in most cases displaced from their work stations, their
work driving them to other places. The more the workload the more the information required. These people normally earn high salaries and they have a lot of
independence when it comes to their work. These kinds of employees require some level of autonomy and managing them may be a difficult task as they don’t like being
supervised. Their managers are in most instances knowledge workers themselves. I have been planning to take some accounting lessons so I think ill form part of the
knowledge work-base in a few years (Davenport, 2005).

We now live in a global economy in which everyone and everything that uses a computer is connected. It has made life easier and more complicated, depending on who you
ask. However, there is little to no argument that this connectivity has cause to the increase of information each person “receives” each day. Forbes estimates that the
amount of data the average person receives throughout a year is equal to “every person in the world reading 174 newspapers every single day” and that was in 2012.

Knowledge management has been growing with the development of information and communication technologies (ICTs). The growth in ICTs is causing the push for companies
to better manage the information they are now creating and have access to. They need to ensure that their valuable information is secure so that others will not try to
steal it. They need to make sure that their employees are up to date with the rapid technology changes, especially those in the information technology (IT) community.
Knowledge is now considered “an input into the economy” because it can help a company succeed (through proper management) or fail (through improper management).
(Roberts, 2009) In the IT community, malicious hackers will break into electronic systems, steal massive amounts of information and sell it on the dark web. If that
information is properly protected and managed, it is less likely to be stolen and sold.
To summarize: With the growth is ICT, knowledge management has also become more important. When a company is aware of the information they possess and they manage it
properly, they can succeed in this current global economy. It they don’t, not only might the company fail but their valuable, private information could be stolen and
sold at the highest bitter to a competitor on the opposite side of the world.

My selected community of practice is the Information Technology (IT) of Community Practice, which is part of the Acquisition Community Connection, which is ran by the
Defense Acquisition University, which is a part of the United States Department of Defense. According to the main page for the Information Technology of Community
Practice, they are focused on improving the performance of the DoD IT Workforce by incorporating netcentricity concepts into every day work. The IT CoP has both
community areas and private work spaces. Information sharing is fulfilled by sharing posts through their online forum on their IT website.
