The body of this paper should be no longer than 10 pages in content and adhere to the APA Publication Manual
(6th Edition). This paper presents a thesis or position about a topic area related to the subject matter of the
course. The thesis presents a statement and position about a debatable issue. Evidence for the position is
assembled through logical reasoning and research to support the position. Personal opinions and personal
anecdotes are not evidence and do not belong in an academic paper. The research paper must state a thesis based
on research and attempt to convince the reader of its feasibility. An adequate literature review will include peer
reviewed journal sources. Information on how to write a thesis statement is available in the Content area of
LEO.
Guidelines for the format of the paper are as follows:
The paper has a 10 page content limit. This limit does not include the title page, table of contents, abstract, or
references.
The beginning of the paper must state the thesis of the paper and explain how the paper is organized to convince
the reader of its reasonableness.
The paper must use APA format (double spaced, 12 points Times New Roman font, one inch margins, page
numbers with running head in the upper right corner, headings, citations, and references). There is a sample
research paper template available in the Content area of LEO and a template with advice on the required
information in the Content area of LEO.
Some Do’s for the Research Paper:
Format the entire paper per APA rules including the cover sheet and use the instructor provided APA paper
template
An abstract is required; a table of contents is not required
Indent all paragraphs .5 inch.
Double space with 1 margins, no justification of text
State the thesis in the first paragraph of the paper
Explain in the beginning of the paper how the document is organized to convince the reader of its thesis
Define any key or potentially ambiguous terms that were used in the thesis statement
Describe the method the paper will use to present evidence and arguments for the thesis
Include a conclusion that summarizes the arguments made for the thesis
If the paper identifies pros/cons (advantages/disadvantages) discuss how/why each supports the thesis
Use headings to break the paper into parts and format the headings per APA rules
Use peer reviewed sources as the best evidence to support your thesis
Check paper for spelling, typos, and grammatical errors
Use references that are not more than 5 years old
