ONE: Our second essay finds a thread that runs through two pieces of literature that, at first glance, don t seem
to have much in common. For example, think of Clouds and Lolita. One was written five hundred years before

establish the common thread. Again, the very point of this assignment is to shed light on what is NOT obvious

To continue with my example: if we don t understand the arguments made about truth in both Lolita and Clouds,
we re really not understanding those pieces of literature. Both works study, up close and personal, the

TWO: Provide specific illustrations of that common thread at work. Use specific scenes with the appropriate
characters. Use the occasional quotes from characters to bring the illustrations to life. Give roughly equal time to
both pieces of literature give them equal attention, in other words.
And that s it you don t need a final conclusion to wrap things up . When you ve illustrated the common
thread, you are done. There s no need, either, to write a conclusion that restates the introduction. That s an utter
waste of time for writers and readers.
